10 jewelry trends for the upcoming season

Fresh jewelry trends come out yearly, and those who like to keep up with fashion tend to accessorize accordingly. However, in today's consumerism and fast fashion, one should think twice before jumping on a trend just to fit in. There's nothing wrong with wearing a trend, especially if you already own the jewelry. Many of today's most popular jewelry trends have been popular in the past, which means your mother or grandmother may have a few items you can borrow.

In any case, while some of the trends you can expect to see this winter are nostalgic, others appear to be gaining traction for the first time. We took a closer look at what was on the runways this fall, what stylists say about accessorizing, and what the rich and famous have been wearing in private and on red carpets. Here's our list of the top ten jewelry trends for the coming season!

Gems, birthstones, and crystals

With healing crystals becoming increasingly popular, it was only a matter of time before crystal and gem jewelry came back into fashion. Jewelry with gems has been featured in recent fashion shows by high fashion brands such as Louis Vuitton and Ulla Johnson, to name a few.

Each month of the year is assigned a gemstone, according to the Gem Society, a tradition that began in Poland (sometime between the 16th and 18th centuries). While different charts exist, according to the modern birthstone chart, "January is garnet, February is amethyst, March is aquamarine, April is diamond, May is emerald, June is alexandrite, July is ruby, August is peridot, September is sapphire, October is tourmaline, November is topaz, and December is blue topaz."

If you enjoy astrology or simply like the idea of wearing a stone that corresponds to your birth month, selecting a ring or pendant with your birthstone is a great way to personalize your jewelry collection.

Completely Cuffed

A silver or gold cuff is a great way to make a subtle statement with only one piece. Cuff bracelets are proving to be the simplest way to dress up any outfit. The silhouette is often just a thick, arched curve, but it has a big impact! For starters, cuffs are usually adjustable, allowing you to wear them in a variety of ways.

If you prefer a more traditional look, wrap a cuff (or two) around your wrist and tuck it under the sleeve of your shirt or sweater. To make the trend more interesting, slip the cuff up your forearm, as seen on the Missoni models, or opt for a wrap-around cuff, as seen on the Tory Burch models.

Beaded Strands

Thinly beaded necklaces are ideal for layering experts. This boho trend is a casual way to accessorize, whether stacking multiple strands of the same beads, mixing and matching, or simply letting a single strand speak for itself. Take a cue from Blumarine, the Y2 K-inspired brand, and add a charm to a beaded strand, or be inspired by Coach's eccentric decision to add unusual objects to a long strand, such as a sports whistle. You don't have to wear a flower crown or a long skirt to wear beads with your attire.

Back to the Boho look.

Remember when everyone wore their hair in feathers? Me too. With dangly boho earrings, we're bringing the essence of the trend back in a much less cringy way. Whether the earrings have feathers, fringe, or simply hang past your collarbone, this earring trend is a fun alternative to last season's sparkly night-luxe earrings (and works much better for daytime activities).

Earrings that are asymmetrical

Meghan Markle, a true trendsetter, wore mismatched earrings in 2019 — something we saw a lot of on fashion runways for 2023. You have two options for how to wear your mismatched/asymmetrical earrings. You can choose one statement earring for one ear and keep the other ear simple, or you can choose two statement earrings that are similar in style but not identical. If you choose a bright color, make sure both of your earrings are the same color so they don't clash.

Necklaces with pendants

Layering dainty necklaces, like dainty bracelets, is so 2021. This winter, it's all about a statement pendant necklace, which looks especially stunning when worn over a turtleneck. I believe [the] Gen Z [crowd] is loving this trend because the necklaces are fun and easy to style. Because of the vintage nature of this style of jewelry, each necklace feels timeless and special, almost like a work of art.

Hoop earrings

While hoop earrings have been popular for many years, it appears that designers are particularly fond of them right now, as they have been seen all over the runways. These are a must-have, just like a pair of diamond studs. Although they appear to be earrings that can only be worn to fancy dinners or events, this is not the case. You can wear these with almost anything. Even if you're just wearing sweatpants, hoop earrings will instantly make you look more put-together.

When it comes to hoop earrings, there are numerous styles to choose from, including huggies (tiny hoops that hug the ear), oversized hoops, and pearl hoops. If you don't already have hoops, make sure your first ones are versatile. Your first pair of hoops should be something simple that you can wear in the morning, afternoon, and evening. Your fifth pair of hoops should have texture and possibly a larger diameter. Something to complete your collection!
